Finding the Energy to Stay Motivated
People always ask me: "Joe, how do you stay motivated to keep pushing your health and fitness goals?" The answer is simpler than you think.
Motivation follows action
Most people wait to feel motivated before they start. In my experience it works the other way around. You start, and the motivation shows up after. The best feeling of my whole week is right after a workout or a run. That feeling is what gets me out the door the next time.
What keeps me going
- Daily habits. When exercise is part of every day, you don't have to decide whether to do it. You just do it.
- Accountability. I post my journey publicly. Knowing you're watching keeps me honest.
- Goals, big and small. A long-term goal gives you direction. Short-term goals give you wins along the way.
- People. Walking with Alright Robyn, playing tennis with friends, and talking with people in the Health Happenings group all give me energy.
- Remembering where I started. I know what ten years off the train feels like. I don't want to go back.
Push your limits
You're stronger than you think. Once you start pushing yourself, you find out your boundaries are a lot further away than you thought.
