How to Make Healthy Breakfast Bites

By Joe GonzalezApr 2, 2021 · Health Happenings

Today I'm making one of my favourite homemade snacks: superfood breakfast bites, inspired by Dr. Greger's How Not to Die Cookbook. It's a super easy recipe. I completely messed it up last time, so this time I'm using what we have in the house.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup pitted dates
  • 3/4 cup walnuts, toasted at 350°F for 10 minutes
  • 2 tablespoons hemp hearts
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup chopped strawberries (the recipe calls for dried fruit, we didn't have any)
  • A splash of vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Method

  1. Blend the dates and toasted walnuts into a paste.
  2. Add the hemp hearts, flax and chia.
  3. Add the strawberries, vanilla and cinnamon, and blend it all together.
  4. Roll into small balls and place them on a tray. (If it's too wet, just scoop small portions onto the tray.)
  5. Freeze. Once frozen, grab one any time you want.

Tip

Using fresh strawberries instead of dried fruit makes the mixture wetter, but they still held together better than I expected. The texture is best once they're frozen. I'm savage and hungry, so I had one right away. Delish.
