Dan Yeates runs Global Martial Arts Academy on Hamilton Mountain, just outside Stoney Creek. We met at Brock University, probably in an Earth Science class we both took as an easy credit. We've stayed in touch since.
What we talked about
- Karate styles. The original systems of karate, including Wado-Ryu (now Wado-Kai), and what makes each unique.
- Bruce Lee. Stories from martial arts history, including a famous demonstration in Long Beach, California.
- World-level competition. Dan has won at the world level twice.
- Running a dojo. Teaching, building a school and balancing family life.
It's like me talking real estate: when someone knows their craft this well, it's fascinating. We could have gone 100 hours. Thanks, Dan.
