I met Dan Shub General back in high school playing football at Lakeshore Catholic. He was in grade 10, I was in grade 9. Back then DJing was a side hobby for him. Today he's known for his skills behind the decks, with a DMC Canada title and a JUNO Award.
What we talked about
- Where it started. Dan started DJing around 2000. We even remembered our high school Battle of the Bands, where his group mixed heavy riffs with hip-hop and won.
- Studying the craft. Like watching football game tape, Dan studied other DJs, their styles, their mistakes and what judges liked.
- DMC and the JUNOs. What it took to go from brand new DJ to champion, and how the JUNO categories work.
- Everyone wants a favour. We both get asked to DJ or create content for free. How do you handle it?
